Fashion legend Antony Price, the groundbreaking UK-based designer behind some of the most iconic looks favored by artists from David Bowie to Roxy Music and even royalty like Queen Camilla, has sadly died aged 80.

His reputation was built on his defined forms and theatrical styles, most notably the pastel suits that featured in the iconic band Duran Duran's seminal music video for "their hit Rio".

"In a tribute, they called him a 'visionary' and a 'kind, intelligent and razor-witted friend,' the band released a statement online."

This news arrives shortly after he unveiled his most recent collection in London, his first in more than 30 years. Singer Lily Allen showcased a dress that paid homage to the famous black velvet "so-called 'revenge dress'" made famous by the late Princess Diana.

A Pioneering Career

Born in Yorkshire in 1945, Price moved to London at the start of the 1960s to attend the prestigious Royal College of Art.

Shortly after his graduation, he began designing clothing for men at Stirling Copper and was the creator of the form-fitting, button-fly pants that Sir Mick Jagger sported during The Rolling Stones' "Gimme Shelter" tour in 1969.

He launched his own brand in 1979 and held his debut runway presentation a year later. The show was launched by creations worn by the famed model Jerry Hall, who was also seen in the bridal gown Price created for her for her nuptials with Sir Mick Jagger.

Partnerships with Stars

A frequent collaborator of musical chameleon David Bowie, Price created the iconic jacket the singer wore for his "As The World Falls Down" music video in 1986.

His signature ability to merge tailoring for all genders along with his technical proficiency in shaping body-hugging looks made him a "one-of-a-kind talent," as stated by the UK's fashion authority.

During the nineties, he commenced designing outfits for the then-Duchess of Cornwall, Camilla, including a number of outfits for her American tour after becoming Duchess.

Following a profession lasting over fifty years, Price staged what would be his last show in London last month in partnership with the label 16Arlington.

  • Sculpted Silhouettes: The core of his aesthetic.
  • Theatrical Flair: Shaping the look of rock and pop.
  • Gender-Fluid Fashion: Merging menswear with womenswear.
  • Clients from Stage to Palace: From David Bowie and Mick Jagger to Queen Camilla.

Design circles mourns the loss to a true visionary whose impact on the visual landscape of music remains profoundly felt.
