New York Jets Coach Glenn Confident Kris Boyd Will Recover Fully After New York City Incident
Jets head coach Aaron Glenn mentioned that he recently spoke with defensive back Kris Boyd and is confident the player will be OK after being shot in midtown Manhattan early Sunday morning.
Glenn noted that Boyd, who is hospitalized, was “upbeat” during a recent discussion.
“What reassures me, is that he’s feeling positive,” Glenn commented. “His wife and his kid, they’re in good spirits and he will come through this without issue.”
It remained unclear when Boyd would leave the hospital, where his condition is described as critical but stable.
“Still unsure,” he added. “However, I can share, hearing him speak, his attitude was encouraging. And again, that’s what gives me comfort, given his positive frame of mind and his words reflect that optimism.”
NYPD issued video stills earlier this week of an individual wanted in the incident involving Boyd. The reason behind the incident is currently under review and authorities said it is unknown if Boyd was singled out. There were no additional victims were reported.
The shooting happened around 2 a.m. on Sunday morning about halfway between MSG and the iconic square. Boyd, 29, was taken to Bellevue Hospital after being shot in the abdomen, as reported. The assailant escaped.
Glenn said Boyd has occupied his thinking “a great deal” since learning of the incident. The coach said that Boyd and his spouse just had a baby.
“The first thing I thought about, he just had a kid,” Glenn remarked. “I thought of his spouse, worrying about his newborn and I want to make sure that he’s OK. Those thoughts dominated my thinking.
“There’s a process to this, which I won’t get into, but It is reassuring that his outcome looks very positive.”
Boyd was inactive during the current season, after joining the team, after being placed on injured reserve on August 18 with an injury to his shoulder that involved surgical repair.
He signed with New York as an unrestricted free agent in spring and was anticipated to become an important component of the team’s updated special teams under Glenn and special teams coordinator Chris Banjo. But Boyd was injured during a training camp practice on 2 August and had to be helped off.
Boyd has remained around the team during the entire campaign while recovering from the shoulder injury.
“He’s been a part of what we’re doing,” Glenn stated. “In fact, he comes to the games all the time. He is completely involved. As one of the league’s best on special teams, he has been instrumental in guiding others.”
Boyd, hailing from the Lone Star State, began his career with Minnesota after his selection in the later rounds by the Vikings out of Texas University in the 2019 draft. He joined the Arizona Cardinals in last year and moved to Houston’s squad later that season. Boyd signed a one-year contract valued at $1.6 million with New York in the spring.
