Ben & Jerry's Co-Founder Claims Unilever Prevented Palestine-Themed Frozen Dessert Product
The original creators behind the well-known ice cream brand Ben and Jerry's has announced that corporate owner the multinational conglomerate prevented the introduction of an innovative Palestine-themed ice cream flavor.
The entrepreneur, that established the business with his partner, revealed that he will personally create this new product within an individual series highlighting causes Ben & Jerry's has been barred from speaking out about.
Longstanding Conflict Involving Founders versus Parent Company
The recent announcement intensifies the ongoing tension between the world-famous ice cream maker with Unilever, the UK-based packaged goods giant that acquired the ice cream brand for over two decades.
Both founders maintain that the parent company along with its ice cream arm Magnum improperly prevented their company from "maintaining its activist principles".
The Fruit Sorbet becoming a Symbol of Solidarity
The entrepreneur stated through social media how he is creating a new watermelon-flavored sorbet, asking for consumer ideas regarding the product's name and additional components.
“I'm doing what they were prevented from doing,” Mr. Cohen declared in his kitchen. “I'm making a watermelon-flavored frozen dessert that advocates for lasting ceasefire for Palestinians and calls for repairing the damage that occurred in the region.”
This particular fruit has become an emblem for support for Palestinians due to its coloration, that match the colors in Palestine's national banner – the distinctive four-color pattern.
Previous Activism plus Recent Changes
In 2021, Ben & Jerry's ceased sales of its products in areas under Israeli control, leading to the parent company transferring the Israeli operation to a local licensee, thus allowing continued sales in disputed territories.
This upcoming product line will be developed under Mr. Cohen's personal brand, the socially conscious dessert company which originally created in 2016 for endorsing former political contender Senator Sanders via the flavor "Bernie's Return".
Leadership Shifts plus Upcoming Plans
The founder indicated how he will create additional frozen dessert varieties focusing on issues that the company was prevented from speaking about openly due to corporate restrictions.
This development comes after co-founder Mr. Greenfield stepped down from Ben & Jerry's recently, following decades of involvement, mentioning worries regarding how its independence had been compromised following corporate moves to restrict their advocacy work.
At that time, Ben Cohen remarked how “My partner has strong compassion and the ongoing dispute with Unilever was breaking it."
"My heart compels me to continue to work inside the company to fight for its independence ensuring that it can actualise the social mission, the values that it was founded on and has maintained for decades," he told journalists.
