US air traffic controllers are more and more seeking additional employment and reporting ill, as they continue to work unpaid amid the federal closure, the transportation secretary has announced.

"These professionals are becoming strained," Sean Duffy informed Fox News on the weekend, as some flights were grounded on the Californian coast due to staffing shortages.

Following the federal closure on October 1st, flight controllers, who are considered essential workers, were told to continue performing their jobs without pay.

But some have been missing, causing airports to halt or reduce their plane traffic, which has added to delays caused by weather and additional factors.

Over 3,000 US flights were postponed on the weekend, and the secretary said he expects the circumstances to deteriorate further.

"I observe the stress," Duffy said in an interview on Sunday Morning Futures, noting that he had spoken to multiple professionals to hear their concerns firsthand.

"They're taking second jobs, they're out there looking, 'Can I drive Uber, can I find another source of earnings to cover expenses?'" he added.

Duffy added that on Saturday 22 alerts at airports said travel would be delayed due to a shortage of workers - one of the highest since the closure started.

The US government shutdown entered its 26th day on the weekend, rendering it the second-longest halt in the past.

He has repeatedly warned that flight authorities would reduce the number of aircraft in the sky if there is a deficit of security staff.

In his conversation, he declined to respond straightforwardly when questioned if it was safe to travel by air in the US, and instead issued a personal plea to controllers.

"I require my staff concentrating on the airspace, not on the monetary matters at home," Duffy said.

On that day, certain flights were grounded at Los Angeles International Airport due to employee deficits, leading to interruption at the fifth-busiest airport in the country and among the most crowded in the world, as well as additional travel extending upward to the metropolis of Oakland.

The Federal Aviation Administration notice was issued at 08:45 local time on Sunday. Numerous trips were back on schedule by midday.

Flights at Newark Liberty International Airport, though, were delayed an average of over an hour due to staffing shortages, and the authority said DFW, the second most active airport in the US, could encounter difficulties from low staffing in the afternoon.

The FAA advised travelers in California to consult carriers about updated flight schedules.

The issue precedes Game 3 of the World Series, which is due to be played in LA on Monday night, and about one month prior to the Thanksgiving holiday, one of the busiest times to fly in the United States.

Strain on US air travel helped end a government shutdown in two thousand nineteen. At the time, the shutdown had entered its fifth week and affected airline operations, including aviator instruction.

It prompted a number of flight controllers to stay home on the identical date on 25 January 2019, briefly halting travel at New York's LaGuardia airport.

On that date, Donald Trump, who at the period was in his initial presidency as president, consented to approve a temporary funding measure, bringing an end to the federal closure after thirty-five days.
